AZUCENA CASTRO - OWL Geonomics

I have a PhD in Biology from the Basque Country University and I’ve worked on both pre-doctoral and post-doctoral projects in France, Portugal and Argentina. Later I pursued several lines of research and eventually I came to work in the world of biotechnology, but more in management roles than as a scientist.

OWL Geonomics was set up in 2002 in Madrid. In 2004 the company relocated to Bizkaia’s Technology Park because Bizkaia offered us an infrastructure and a number of opportunities which are important in our field of work, biotechnology. Firstly, a cluster of biotechnology companies was being created together with co-operative research centres. And the general policy of the regional government, and institutions such as Bizkaia Provincial Government, was very favourable in the sense that it helped us move into the area and take on skilled staff.

Through Bizkaia:xede we were able to take on a person whom we brought over from England – from Manchester to be precise – and who had the right skills for the job vacancy we needed to fill.

Our market-place is global, both in terms of products and in terms of the people we need to form part of our organizations. For that reason Bizkaia:xede’s assistance programme is invaluable, especially for helping us source people who will stay with us over time.
